McWherter...hmmm. That is a familiar name, you may think, especially if you're over 50 or know about Tennessee politics.

If you're not familiar, here's an introduction for you.

Mike McWherter is running on the Democrat ticket for Governor of Tennessee.

He was at Joe's Restaurant today, doing a meet and greet. There were a lot of citizens who came in specifically to talk with him.

McWherter and Tennessee, have you heard that before?

How about another hint...vanilla wafers, of the Nilla variety?

There was another guy, back in Tennessee politics who had the political savvy and the wherewithall to capture the heart and minds of Tennessee's voters.

Ned Ray McWherter, Mike's father, served the State of Tennessee, also on the Democratic ticket. His byline was, “Gimme a cup of coffee and two Vanilla Wafers, and I'll be ready to go to work!"

Mike hasn't broken out the box of Nilla's yet, but he's all about it when he's talking about what he's going to do.

Personable, with a smile, he's ready to talk, to get his message across.

He states he's a businessman, knowing how to balance a budget and run an efficient organization and he's interested in state government living within its means.

He also talks about fiscal transparency, to maintain the public's confidence.

He opposes the income tax and wants to preserve the state's low-tax climate.

He wants to create new jobs, and is the owner of a Tennessee company that works Tennesseans. He's interested in the education system, knowing that a first class education is the key to Tennessee's future.

As a small business owner, he supports small businesses and wants to push policies that grow them, so entrepreneurs can be successful

He's a father, who understands schools and maintaining high standards, promoting higher education.

He knows that agriculture is big business and wants to develop new strategies to encourage consumers to "Pick Tennessee Products." He wants to continue and expand the Tennessee Agriculture Enhancement Program. He's interested in developing new crops and biofuels. He also grew up in a rural area and is interested in preserving family farms.

He wants to protect TennCare, one of the most comprehensive state healthcare plans in the US. However, he wants to keep it under control so the people who need it, get it. But he wants to push for better care and disease management, focusing on education, fitness and preventive management.

He's interested in the environment, preserving public lands, air and water quality and promoting clean energy.

Weather was in the low 30's in Woodbury today. He was going to walk around the square, but decided against it because he forgot his big coat.

Just one of those things, don't blame him a bit.

He said he'd be back to Woodbury again a little later.
